Common Vulvovaginal Conditions
Most women experience a vulvovaginal condition at some point in their lives. It’s more common than you think! Some of the most common vulvovaginal conditions are vulvodynia, vaginitis, and sexually transmitted infections.
Vulvodynia
Vulvodynia is chronic pain or discomfort of the vulva that lasts more than three months. This pain can make certain activities uncomfortable, such as sexual intercourse or sitting for long periods of time. For some people, the pain is constant, while for others, it comes and goes.
Vaginitis
Vaginitis is the inflammation of the vagina. This condition is one of the most common reasons women schedule appointments with their providers in addition to their annual well-woman exam. This inflammation can come with many conditions, including:
- Yeast Infections
- Bacterial Vaginosis
- Atrophic Vaginitis
- Trichomoniasis
Identifying the cause of the inflammation and treating that cause will help reduce your inflammation and discomfort.
Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
Some STIs can affect the vulva, causing pain and irritation. STIs can happen to anyone, and your provider is not here to judge you. Routine testing and the use of barrier methods, like condoms, can help prevent future infections and help you better understand your status.
One of the most common STIs that can affect the vulva is genital herpes. Ulcers, which cause pain, itching, and other symptoms, can appear on the vulva, as well as other locations such as the buttocks. Antiviral medication can help shorten the duration of the outbreak.
Yeast Infection
Most women experience yeast infections at some point in their lives. These infections, caused by the Candida albicans fungus, can lead to vulvar swelling, vaginal itching/burning, and painful urination. Your vaginal discharge may change as well.
Your provider can diagnose a yeast infection and offer over-the-counter or prescription medication options.
When to See a Vulvovaginal Specialist
A vulvovaginal specialist is a provider that specializes in the care of the vulva and vagina. If you have any of the following symptoms, it may be time to schedule an appointment with a vulvovaginal specialist:
- Pain
- Stinging
- Burning
- Throbbing
- Abnormal (For You) Vaginal Discharge
Your provider will diagnose the cause of your symptoms and offer treatment options based on the condition, your medical history, and your lifestyle. Every appointment at Florida Woman Care is centered on your needs, so you feel comfortable talking to your provider.
